Kashmir in the Spotlight: Djinns of Eidgah in Kochi

The English play, ‘The Djinns of Eidgah’, is about the conflict in Kashmir. It offers an unusual look at the mess in the troubled state. It is written with feeling and craftsmanship by the Bangalore-based Abhishek Majumdar who is a playwright, theatre director, teacher and actor. It is probably the finest play in the ongoing Writer’s Bloc festival. A play without blackouts, it offers neither characters nor audience any respite from the complex problems of Kashmir.

This play is produced by Rage Productions and is directed by Richard Twyman, who runs workshops on Shakespeare at the National Theatre of the Royal Shakespeare Company, one of Britain’s leading drama schools.

The play has two Djinns: Hafiz and Rafis. According to the dictionary, a djinn, in Muslim legend, is a spirit often capable of assuming human or animal form and exercises a supernatural influence over people. The world came to know about the djinns through the tales of the Arabian Nights.

The cast includes Adhir Bhat, Ali Fazal, Ashwin Musharan, Divyang Thakkar, Faezeh Jalali, Karan Pandit, Meher Acharia-Dar, Neil Bhoopalam and Rajit Kapur. The music is by Taufiq Qureshi and the set design by Shama Shah.

The duration of the play is 85 minutes without intermission and it is strictly aged for 10 years and above. The play will be staged this Sunday, March 3, at 7 pm in JT Pac
